Carbon Footprint
Thank you for your interest in our unique Environmental Project.
All of this work is done at Coodlie Park Farm Retreat, the main base for Nullarbor Traveller.
Coodlie Park Farm Retreat is a 3000 acre (approximately 5 kilometres x 3 kilometres) rural coastal property situated on the Flinders Highway on the Eyre Peninsula.www.coodliepark.com.au
It has a range of accommodation options from bush camping, hostel rooms and self contained cottages. A number of day and overnight tours also operate from the property.
Coodlie Park is a member of International Hostels (IH) and is an associate YHA hostel. The property is also a registered Wwoof Host Farm (Willing Workers on Organic Farms).
The owners have always been respectful of their environment but with the capital purchase acquisition of Nullarbor Traveller, it was necessary to develop think strategically about the cost to the environment of their business operations.
As part of its normal operation, Coodlie Park Farm Retreat has made a conscious decision to use green energy (electricity and gas) which has already had its carbon emissions offset. In addition the property is reliant on its own water supply collecting all rain water from buildings, cabins and outhouses. Where possible, water that has been used in the shower, sink and washing machines is reused on specially located garden beds on the property.
Recycling forms a large part of our commitment to the environment with all cans, bottles, glasses, tins being collected and recycled.
The biggest business cost to the environment is fuel for transport, petroleum and diesel.Annually, the businesses of Coodlie Park Farm Retreat, Nullarbor Traveller and Xplore Eyre uses on average 80,000 litres of fuel ($100,000 dollar value) so it is a significant cost to offset. To achieve this, one third (1/3) of the property (1000acres) has been set aside for environmental rehabilitation.
Customers of Nullarbor Traveller (international) showed a real interest in being actively involved in offsetting their own travel footprint, and from this simple gesture the concept to offset our travel footprint was born.
Titled a “Surprisingly Different” annual sustainable environmental project it has been developed into an annual program which allows customers of the business/s, wwoofers and interested people to collect local native tree and scrub seeds, identify and remove noxious weeds on the property and to prepare and dry seeds in preparation for direct seeding.
To ensure compliance and so that we can do what we say, our company is audited annually by canopy Australia to set the targets for the following year.
It is hoped that Coodlie Park Farm Retreat can be a “place” whereby people can come relax and enjoy the environment and get involved with the project and even (if international travelers) fully offset their trip to Australia.
As this project evolves and supported by Global Gossip Internet services, travelers will be able to enter the parameters of travel into a spreadsheet which will then provide information as to how they can offset their whole travel to Australia-this could be through:
? Kilograms of native seeds
?Number of hour’s environmental work
? Number of trees planted
This “Surprisingly Different” Environmental project is our commitment to ensuring that the cost of running our business does not impact the environment – and in most seasons provides our property with a positive carbon footprint balance.
Please feel free to ask additional questions on how you can be involved in the project.
